Cinder Block Tower

Today was my first day of W.A.S.H. Our assignment was to use only newspapers and glue to create something that would support a cinder block.

Process: My initial idea was to roll my newspapers into one big cylinder. However, I changed my mind and decided to make six or seven smaller cylinders and glue them together. I thought they would stay together better, whereas the one big cylinder might unravel. After I glued the cylinders together, I wrapped one sheet of newspaper around them to hold them together and make it look nice. After that, I folded some newspapers into flat squares and stacked them on top of the cylinders. The stacked squares served as an even surface for the cinder block to rest on. I thought I was done, but when I tested my tower with the cinder block, it would not keep its balance. After much thought, I decided to roll some newspapers (long ways) and wrap them around the bottom of the combined cylinders. This created a larger base and fixed the balance issue.

My tower successfully held the cinder block and stood 15 inches tall!
